When you consider the classroom, where there is the big opportunity for face-to-face discussion, it is quite difficult to asses your CSCL tool. We also experienced this difficulty in a project for architecture students. Although the environment is designed as a kind of virtual studio with CSCL functionalities in mind, it is used in such a way, where students only saved and exchanged files. All of the social processes are done out of the environment, in the real studio, face-to-face. It is still a question for us: Was the tool/interface not affording sociability? Were the students not ready to use such a tool? Were the teachers the reason who did not encourage students to use the environment for social interaction? should have we designed tasks that would stimulate students to use the environment for social interaction? etc, etc.....
