Finnish prehistory was the topic of the Stones and Rocks project, which sought to provide an insight into past times and an introduction to the prehistory of Finland. The approach to prehistory of Finland was by studying stones. Pupils could choose to approach the project from either a historical or geographical perspective. The historical perspective examined cultural development from the Stone Age to the present day. The geological perspective examined gemstones and various metals. The project involved subject matter relating to history, environmental and natural science, mother tongue and art.

Electric circuits study

The course was arranged by Antonis Antoniou and Olga Chortaria. There were 28 students from 10th grade of the 5th Gymnasium of Nikaia (near Pireaus port of Athens) involved in the course. Students were 14 years old. During the course / project students examined a counterintuitive electric circuit.

Students were using the Synergeia computer supported collaboration tool which was combined with an experiment in the laboratory and a computer simulation.

In fall 1997 the Distance Learning in Multimedia Networks -project and the City of Tampere organized a test course with 39 students and five teachers from two secondary schools.

Before starting the course the teachers and two external specialists from the Regional Environmental Agency produced learning material to the web-based Media Center. Also the Finnish Broadcasting Company and the IVO Group offered a number of educational videos to be part of the Media Center's content.

During the course the students first got familier with the ready made learning material of the Media Center and chooseed their own project subject. After this students started to work in small groups in the web-based Studios containing such a collaborative tools as discussion groups, chat, mindmap drawing tool and file sharing system.

In the Studio students were asking questions from the external specialists, drawing mind maps and finally producing their own WWW -multimedia presentations of the study subject.
