In fall 1997 the Distance Learning in Multimedia Networks -project and the City of Tampere organized a test course with 39 students and five teachers from two secondary schools.

Before starting the course the teachers and two external specialists from the Regional Environmental Agency produced learning material to the web-based Media Center. Also the Finnish Broadcasting Company and the IVO Group offered a number of educational videos to be part of the Media Center's content.

During the course the students first got familier with the ready made learning material of the Media Center and chooseed their own project subject. After this students started to work in small groups in the web-based Studios containing such a collaborative tools as discussion groups, chat, mindmap drawing tool and file sharing system.

In the Studio students were asking questions from the external specialists, drawing mind maps and finally producing their own WWW -multimedia presentations of the study subject.

Kivet ja kalliot -projektin aiheena oli Suomen esihistoria. Projektin tavoitteena oli eläytyminen menneisiin aikoihin ja tutustuminen Suomen esihistoriaan. Suomen esihistoriaa lähestyttiin kivien tarkastelun kautta. Oppilaat saivat valita projektissa joko historiallisen tai geologisen lähestymistavan. Historiallisesta näkökulmasta tarkasteltiin kulttuurin kehitystä kivikaudelta nykyisyyteen. Geologisesta näkökulmasta tutkittiin korukiviä ja erilaisia metalleja. Projektiin liittyi historian, ympäristö- ja luonnontiedon, äidinkielen ja kuvaamataidon aineksia.

Teillä ja turuilla -projektin aiheena oli Suomen keskiajan historia. Projektin tavoitteena oli tutustua siihen, miten elämä keskiajalla muuttui, miten tiet ja kaupungit kehittyivät, miten tieto kulki ja miten Suomi liitettiin Ruotsin yhteyteen. Projekti keskittyi lähinnä historiaan, mutta siihen integroitiin myös äidinkieltä ja kuvaamataitoa. Projekti toteutettiin tutkivan oppimisen periaatteita noudattaen.

The project was part of the school’s individual class project to develop collaboration and sought to build on cooperation between class teachers and pupils alike. The aim was for sixth grade teachers to plan and develop teaching together and to make and acquire material together in a bid to promote teaching quality and learning. During the project, pupils were involved in much cooperation with other sixth grade classes, including commenting on each other’s work in the discussion forum on Mauri.
